What will the future of work and leadership look like as AI evolves?
In my recent reflections, I have considered how our thinking might be shifting, how AI could change the way we respond, and might quietly become more important as a result.
So, what do we move forward with? Specifically, how might work and leadership begin to change? I think work itself might slowly develop into two layers.
One layer will increasingly be handled by AI.
Another layer will likely become more important, as it canโt be automated.
The nature of work may shift from execution to decision-making and building meaningful connections. I also feel leadership may begin to get evaluated very differently.
However, as information, structure, and even strategy become easier to access with AI, something else might start to matter more.
The ability to think clearly without becoming mechanical. The ability to stay emotionally present without becoming overwhelmed.
Leadership could shift from knowledge alone to clear thinking and emotional intelligence for deeper impact.
Communication might also start to split into two very different areas. The role of day-to-day communication may be assisted by AI. Emails, summaries, responses, presentations. But the remaining conversations may become far more important than before.
Those moments might start to matter more, as people begin to notice the difference between polished communication and real presence. This shift creates two very different possibilities.
One possibility is that we slowly become emotionally indifferent, letting systems think, frame, soften, and respond for us so often that we gradually lose depth in our engagement. At the same time, some people might become more reflective, self-aware, and intentional as a result of this shift.
Maybe the future wonโt just separate people who use AI from those who donโt.
It might separate those who stay aware while using AI from those who slowly stop engaging in their own thinking and relations. This is where the profound change, the true rewiring, will occur.
