Over the last few days, the Indigo episode has been everywhere. And somewhere in the middle of all that is happening, it made me think.
We all love #efficiency. We celebrate it. And many times, we chase it.
And the moment we taste it, we want more. The achievement gives a high. A dopamine rush? Maybe.
You win once, so you want to win again. And again. Until it slowly becomes an addiction.
This post is not about Indigo.
It is about all of us. All organizations, leaders, cultures.
Efficiency is a wonderful thing until it crosses a line. There is a thin, almost invisible boundary between efficiency and over-efficiency.
And when we don’t notice that crossing, something quietly starts to get affected. People. Emotions. Sensitivity. Human judgment.
Everything slowly gets replaced by speed, checklists, processes, and control.
Work becomes transactional. Relationships become mechanical. Responses become robotic.
And eventually, we stop “seeing” the human being in front of us.
There is a vast difference between #DoingThingsRight” and #DoingTheRightThings“.
Both matter. But the balance is important. #HowFast over #WhatMatters.
Efficiency without the human aspect can break trust. Maybe the real question for every organization today is not “How efficient can we become?” That is no doubt significant, but may be the question to ask is “What are we willing to lose in the name of efficiency?” – people, dignity, emotional safety…
Speed is good. Systems are good. Excellence is good. But without humanity, none of them can sustain.
Cultures are remembered not for how fast they move, but for how they make people feel while moving fast.
And that is the thin line we must protect.
