Standing Firm

In 1960, 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗢𝗹𝗱𝗵𝗮𝗺 𝗞𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲𝘆 had just started working at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration when she received one of her first assignments.

She was asked to review an application to approve 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗲, a drug already sold in many other countries. Most people thought it would be a routine process.

But Kelsey was not sure it was safe.

The safety evidence did not convince her, so she kept asking for stronger data.

The drug company pressured her, but she stood firm.

In 1961, reports from Europe and Australia showed that taking thalidomide during pregnancy was linked to severe birth defects. Because of her caution, the drug was never approved for sale in the United States.

What I remember most is not just that she said no.

It was how one careful decision, made quietly at her desk, had effects that reached far beyond that moment.

Her actions protected countless families. They changed how people thought about drug safety. She showed what can happen when someone chooses to stand firm, even when others move ahead.

Kelsey did not realize she was stopping a disaster. She only knew the evidence was not strong enough.

And she would not let herself be rushed.
