Same Picture. Different Story

These are a series of pictures I captured through my lens – a squirrel resting, others gathering, cuddling, a lizard entering the frame, and a moment of unexpected interaction. When I saw these images together, a story began to form in my mind.

But here’s what struck me: someone else looking at these same photos might tell a completely different story.

And that’s exactly what happens in organizations, too.

Even when people are in the same environment, attending the same meetings, hearing the same messages – the stories they carry in their minds can be very different.

Because people don’t just react to what is happening. They react to what they believe is happening. Over time, these individual interpretations begin to shape the culture of a workplace.

This is why, in organizations, we can’t simply assume that alignment occurs on its own. It doesn’t.

People need a shared story – a sense of who we are, what we’re building together, and what we stand for. That’s what creates belonging. That’s what brings focus. That’s what builds commitment. It is about how leaders communicate, how teams relate, and how small moments are interpreted across the board. That’s where the real story lives.

The role of leadership is to create and reinforce a common understanding, not by controlling the narrative, but by continuously engaging people in shaping it together.

Yes, there will always be individual differences. But when there’s a strong shared story, those differences don’t divide — they add richness.

In your organization, is everyone looking at the same picture but telling very different stories?
And what can you do to bring those stories closer together?
