Don Ritchie spent many years living across the road from a Sydney cliff called “The Gap”.
The place was beautiful, but sometimes people went there when life felt too heavy.
Don started to notice these people.
He would see someone standing alone for a long time, someone who looked lost, or someone who seemed to have nowhere else to go.
He would just walk over to them.
Sometimes he started a conversation, sometimes he asked if they were alright, and if it felt right, he would invite them home for a cup of tea.
He wasn’t a counselor and didn’t have a special method. He simply listened.
Over the years, people credited Don with helping save more than 160 lives.
What moved me most was how simple it all was.
There wasn’t a grand gesture, a campaign, or a spotlight.
It was just one person noticing someone else, choosing to walk over, and staying long enough to make a difference.
He did this quietly, again and again, for many years.
A conversation, a bit of time, a cup of tea.
And lives were changed.
To me, that’s what a quiet ripple looks like.
